How To Choose: Boarding Swimwear

If you’re going boarding out on the beach you’re going to want to dress for it. Some of you might like to slap on any rash shirt and board shorts or some might prefer to wear a wetsuit.  Both are great options depending on what you’re looking for. It’s not like a job that requires technical clothing but there are some things you’ll want to consider before you buy.

The weather has a large impact on what you’ll want to wear. If it’s consistently warm, a rash shirt and board shorts are great options as it keeps the water on you. If during your past beach adventures you find yourself getting cold a wetsuit might be the better option. A good fitting wetsuit will keep you warmer.

In either case, you’ll want your clothes to last. The surf can be rough on clothes so make sure yours are made of the right material. Neoprene for wetsuits is a great halfway between being tough and allowing free movement. Rash shirts are normally made of spandex and nylon or polyester so if you have allergies make sure to check that out.

Another criteria to keep an eye out for is how much sun protection you’ll get. A lot of swim clothes are now indicating their sun resistance rating in either UPF (how much radiation is absorbed) or SPF (how long it takes for your skin to turn red). The higher the number the better the rating. If there is no rating and you’re worried, remember that tightly knit clothes will block more sun that loose ones. If you’re in doubt hold it up to a light; the more like coming through, the less resistant it is.
