How To Choose: Putter

Putters are clubs which are used on the green to lead the ball into the hole. They can be lighter or heavier. The slower the green seems, the heavier your putter should be. The choice of a putter to match your movement is a determining feature for your performance. In fact, most golfers will play 36 putts per course, compared with only around 14 drives. The putter is therefore the most important club in the bag!

There are three main forms of putter: the blade, the half-mallet and the mallet

Depending on your movement

If you putt straight and swaying, you need a face-balanced putter. The characteristics of this type of putter are that it is perfectly balanced and that the clubface will therefore always remain straight on during the putt.

If you putt curved, you need a heel-toe weighted putter. As their name suggests, the weight of these putters is distributed towards the heel and the toe of the club, making them open naturally when raised and then close when lowered.

Depending on your weaknesses

If you have difficulty measuring, choose a blade model putter, which is lighter and gives better feedback.

If you have difficulty with timing and alignment, opt for a mallet or half-mallet putter. These heavier putters aid the rocking motion and the timing of the putt, as well as the spin on the ball. They are also equipped with a long alignment marker.

If you tend to overshoot the hole to the right, choose a putter with an offset (where the club head is set back from the shaft). This will allow you to keep your hands ahead of the head of the putter and therefore to close the head when you strike the ball.

If you tend to overshoot the hole to the left, choose a putter without an offset.
