How To Choose: Exercise Bike

To choose the right exercise bike for your use, you need to determine what will be your use: are you resuming physical activity? Physical maintenance? Physiotherapy? Training?

Every exercise bike is designed to be efficient and comfortable for a specific use. Your use should then take a big part in determining which bike you will get. Looking for performance? Your back will be bent forward to insure a powerful pedaling. Softer use with the aim of losing weight? An exercise bike with a “straight back” position will then be a good choice.

Which exercise bike for which use?

Just like for classic bikes, there are different positions possible on exercise bikes. Three different positions for three different uses:

Soft strengthening and physiotherapy

When using a bike for soft strengthening or physiotherapy, you should favor comfort over performance. The lumbar comfort is crucial, more than the pedaling power. The straighter the back is, the better it will be.

Cardio training use

For cardio training use, with work sessions of at least 30 minutes, the user needs to be able to often change the back position while exercising. To combine endurance and comfort, a compromise needs to be found between back position and pedaling power.

Performance use

For “performance” use, as training or an intense cardio workout, the pedaling power is the most important characteristic. The user’s position on the exercise bike is designed to get maximum pedaling power, to reach the performance target. The back is bent forward.

Type of resistance adjustment: mechanical or motorised?

The mechanical adjustment will be very easy to use: by turning the knob, the user will pull a cable which will bring a magnet closer to the inertia wheel, so the resistance will be higher and pedaling more difficult. The motorised adjustment will allow the user to change the setting directly from the control panel. This offers two benefits: more levels of difficulty and the possibility of setting some training programs with variable tensions that will change automatically. The programs will be designed with different targets in mind: to burn calories, to get ready for performance and many more.

Pedaling fluidity: what is the impact when using your exercise bike?

A comfortable pedaling is a smooth pedaling. The weight of the wheel influences the fluidity of pedaling, but that is not the only factor: the weight distribution on the wheel, the transmission system are some of the other factors. Depending on your goals, the amplitude of pedaling, determined by the diameter of the inertia wheel, also has an impact on the success of your exercises. The bigger the diameter is, the larger your movements will be.

The control panel

Every control panel will give you the basic information: speed, distance, running time, average number of calories burnt. Some models will also display the heart rate (nothing is more precise than a heart rate monitor belt to measure your heart rate). Then, depending on the models, you will have more or less programs, some attachable features (coaching, mp3…) and an increased ease of reading the information provided thanks to back lighting or big screens.

The user maximum weight

It changes from one model to another. The Domyos range offers models with user maximum weights from 110 to 130 kg, and even up to 150 kg for some models. Make sure your bike is designed with stabilizers to ensure a safe use even on an uneven floor.

The saddle

All the saddles are adjustable in height. For instance, the Domyos products are designed for users from 160cm (5’2″) to 200cm (6’3″). Some saddles are also adjustable in terms of depth. Some exercise bikes offer the opportunity the adjust the handlebar height and sometimes even its incline.

Stability

Make sure your bike is designed with stabilisers so it will be stable on uneven floors.
